Way of the Hunter 2 Crashing, Low FPS & Fatal Error Fixes
This page collects every fix and workaround the studio has published, plus the problems players report most in Steam reviews. Version at the time of writing: Patch 1.1, build 212672 (October 1, 2026).
First steps for any crash or fatal error
- Update GPU and CPU drivers. The studio’s first advice since the demo: the game runs on Unreal Engine 5, which performs best with current drivers.
- Delete old demo config files if you ever installed the demo. Close the game, press Windows + R, paste
%LocalAppData%\WOTH2\Saved, delete only the Config folder, relaunch. Symptoms: wrong resolution list, UI scaling or number glitches, odd particles on screen. - Verify game files in Steam.
- Still crashing? Report it (link below) with your DxDiag and save file.
Known crash causes with workarounds
| Problem | Workaround | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Crash on launch on laptops with an NPU | Disable AI Boost in Device Manager | Update 2 notes |
| Crash loading Kilimaya on Intel 13th/14th gen i7/i9 + RTX 4090 | CPU voltage instability; slightly downclock turbo ratios (e.g. ThrottleStop) | Update 2 notes |
| Xbox Series S crash near a lodge full of dioramas | Memory-heavy spot; known issue | 1.0 known issues |
| Co-op crash when host uses the Buffden Apex Predator crossbow | Avoid it as host for now | 1.0 known issues |
Low FPS and stutter
- FSR setting does nothing (PC): set Anti-aliasing to TSR first, then to FSR.
- FPS drops at sunset in certain places: known issue.
- Binoculars or scope drop FPS hard: several Steam reviews report it, especially ultrawide. An early patch fixed binoculars slowly reducing performance; if it returns, report it with your resolution.
- Snow + TSR/TAAU: visual issues in snowy weather with those anti-aliasing modes.
- The game supports DLSS 4.5, FSR 4, frame generation and resolution scaling. Specs are on the PC requirements page.
Controller problems
- Stick drift: Patch 1.1 raised the default inner look deadzone to 12. If the camera still drifts, raise it further.
- No invert Y: added in Patch 1.1, for both horizontal and vertical look.
- Can’t remap a controller: controller layouts are not customisable; keyboard and mouse are.
Gameplay bugs people search for
- “Can’t exit vehicle” / ejected from vehicle: vehicle bugs are reported in reviews; Patch 1.1 fixed multiplayer vehicle issues. Fast travel is the usual escape if you are stuck.
- “Can’t sleep in tent”: a 0.4.1 fix stopped the WildHeart Wild Escort tent packing itself up when you held the sleep key. Make sure the tent is not in water.
- Lost consciousness: deep water (even in a vehicle) knocks you out and sends you to the lodge.
- Animal disappeared or came back to life: in co-op, client kills can vanish when the host is far away (known issue). Report solo cases.
- PS5: stuck after using the Primos shooting stick after a harvest, and a mountain rendering see-through near Lake Sasquatch in Performance Mode: both known issues.
- Season Pass content missing: check for the deer, dog, ibex and kudu statues; restart the game fully; then contact your store’s support. See editions and DLC.
How to report a bug
Nine Rocks uses the THQ Nordic bug database (Redmine). Include your platform in the title, the game version, steps to reproduce, and attach your save:
- Save folder on PC:
%LocalAppData%\WOTH2\Saved\SaveGames - If logging in with Xbox Live fails on the bug site, log in with another platform account and say which platform you play on.
